![]() ![]() Edit: To the best of my knowledge, the first RTS game to give them different soundtrack scores as well. Red Alert: Two factions sharing only a few units, with unique defenses and approaches (powerhouse vs swarm). ![]() Stat difference widened, starting on powerhouse-subversive path but still closer to jack of all trades balance. Warcraft II: Two factions with more difference, but still clear counterpart design barring high-tier units. Warcraft: Symmetrical factions but with visual difference and sometimes tiny stat changes (or a special ability)Ĭommand & Conquer: Two factions sharing many buildings, but with distinctly different units in function and design (powerhouse vs subversive). Usually most don't attempt to pass SC's bar (exceptions, such as Earth 2160 or Grey Goo will the Goo, exist).ĭune 2: Symmetrical factions, save one unique unit per side. Sadly, further movement in making truly asymmetrical factions has mostly fallen to the wayside these days. But SC also experimented further with creep and larva, making the sides even more asymmetrical, as was the trend. ![]() SC just took this idea further, even if that just meant making two structures the do the same thing (barracks and Gateway) look different (something RA had done with Soviet and Allied barracks). There were interesting unique units there as well, like teleporting tanks (chronotanks), deployable MAD tanks, and other unique units. Only five units were shared between the Allies and the Soviets in Red Alert, for example (Engineer, Rifleman, Rocket Soldier, Ore Truck, and Transport) out of around 25 or so (per side), which is a pretty small overlap. ![]() Still, this isn't much more than a natural progression from what Red Alert, the prior biggest RTS had done. The workers overlap, looking different (and building differently) but harvesting the same way.
